Terry Hutchinson at CRW
Terry Hutchinson has vowed to foster more public engagement during this next four-year cycle of the America's Cup.
While careful to guard top secret technology and other proprietary information, the American Magic skipper told an audience at Charleston Race Week the United States syndicate plans to be more welcoming to the public over the next few years.
"Everyone involved with the American Magic team has been very appreciative of the tremendous support we've received from so many, and we certainly feel a sense of responsibility to our fans," Hutchinson said.
"Moving forward, we want to find ways to interact with our supporters and give them an opportunity to learn more about the American Magic program."

Multiple defending champions highlight Charleston Race Week 2022
There was a whirlwind of activity on the docks of Charleston Harbor Marina and Resort on Thursday morning.
Some crew members were hauling sail bags while others were busily rigging sailboats. Race committee members were carrying flags and pulling dock carts filled with buoys.
Across the Cooper River, smaller boats such as the Melges 24 and VX One were being launched in assembly line fashion.
Charleston Race Week 2022 got underway Thursday with most competitors getting out on the water for tune-up and testing. Organizers conducted an abbreviated practice session that featured multiple starts to give teams an opportunity to shake off the rust.
A typically large fleet of boats in 13 classes is all set for Charleston Race Week, being held Friday through Sunday on six different racing circles.
Charleston Race Week 2022 brings a return to normal on all fronts
by Bill Wagner
Charleston Race Week is back in full force.
Coronavirus canceled the iconic spring regatta in 2020, while the ongoing pandemic forced organizers to hold a scaled-back event in 2021.
With conditions improving throughout the United States, event director Randy Draftz is pleased to announce that Charleston Race Week 2022 will showcase a return to normal.
A fleet of more than 200 boats in 15 classes is expected to descend upon this famous southern coastal city for this 26th edition of Charleston Race Week, being held April 28-May 1.
"The previous two years were difficult for sailboat racing with numerous regattas being canceled or postponed. It is a testament to the popularity of Charleston Race Week, the commitment of our sponsors and the determination of our competitors that we were able to hold the regatta in 2021 amidst the pandemic," Draftz said.
"We are thrilled to have made it through to the other side and are excited to host a regatta that will be better than ever. Charleston Race Week, which has always been a regatta unlike any other, is making a strong comeback this year."
Same as it Ever Was, yet Better
To paraphrase the Talking Heads (with apologies), you may find yourself wishing for a regatta. And you may find yourself wanting the perfect venue. And you may ask yourself, where can I find one-design Mecca? All of that and much more will be readily available this spring at Charleston Race Week - a regatta unlike any other.
Veteran attendees of Race Week - now in its 27th year - understand this event’s broad appeal. They know they’ll be treated to top-notch race management, along with challenging tidal patterns and a characteristic variety of wind strengths. They know they’ll be staying in one of the country’s most desirable travel destinations with amazing hospitality options. And they know they’ll be hosted by a regatta organizer wholly focused on competitors’ needs.
That’s Race Week, same as it ever was. But CRW 2022 (April 28-May 1) promises to be even better. There will be four inshore race courses this year and two others that take competitors offshore. There will be one-design fleets, ORC classes and even PHRF classes. The pro-am competition will be back, sailed aboard RS 21s (some of which are available for charter). And there will be some of the top luminaries from our sport on hand to augment the proceedings.
Daily race debriefs will be offered by none other than Leandro Spina, the Olympic Development Director for U.S. Sailing. His drone-aided footage - displayed on the beachfront jumbotron - will help competitors get the most out of their time in on the water.
And, the always-fun post-race festivities will be on full throttle with Gosling’s Rum, Quantum Sails, and all the other sponsors throwing in their ample support. So carve out some time on your schedule this spring and ink in Charleston Race Week on your calendars. This year, it’s going to be a blast! Same as it ever was.
